First, people are always thinkin' about somethin'. Most of it's pretty dumb, trivial stuff -- did I turn my lights off, did I leave that job application on the printer, stupid shit like that. Surface thoughts are easy ta read, so someone who's been trained to combat bein' read are gonna fill up their thoughts with useless shit. With me so far?

Okay. What ya have to do is try to make them think more about the stuff they're tryin' ta hide. Ya ever question suspects about stuff? It'd be kinda like that -- lead them inta trappin' themselves. Sometimes they're gonna start flooding their thoughts with even more crap, but sometimes because they're not supposed to be thinkin' about something, that's suddenly the only thing on their mind, yeah?

Good. *nods* Now -- when ya do run into someone with training, ya can't force it. Tryin' to force your way through a block's only gonna hurt you, not the person you're tryin' ta read. There's a kind of ability that's able to hurt someone else like that, but they're rare an' ya wouldn't wanna run into one of 'em. Bad news, every last one. *grimaces and shakes his head* That's one of the ones I'd agree with the Company goes on the dangerous talents list...

Anyway, I'm sure you've noticed Bennet's hardest ta read when he's calm. Still probably pretty damned hard to get through when he's not, but you're never gonna get through a block if the person blockin' is calm. What ya have to do is get 'em rattled, make 'em angry, do somethin' ta shake 'em up and lose their concentration. Doesn't always work, but strong emotions? Make it easier to get into someone's head than anythin' else.
