224. Mad

He'd have to be insane to be doing what he was doing. Absolutely barking mad. It really was the only logical explanation for it. And yet, not only was he talking to the man, he was forgiving him for what he'd done. Forgiving him for the incident on the bridge, for the gunshots that had nearly killed him, even for what had happened next.

It hadn't been Bennet's fault, anyway -- that's what he told himself years ago, and he still believed it. Thompson had... issues, and was practiced in keeping his less than appropriate means of dealing with those issues quiet. Bennet probably never even knew. And he'd never told him who he was protecting, anyway, so how could he have known?

And after everything else that had happened over the years; after realizing that he was back on the Company's radar and that Bennet was running from them too, now, how could he turn his back on the man who had once been his best friend? Maybe he wasn't the one who was mad -- matter of fact, he was pretty sure it was the world they were living in that had lost its bloody marbles. They were just along for the ride...
